Future Dance FAQ's
What is Future Dance?
NBT has been a leader in arts education since 1980. Future Dance, its recognized and successful outreach program, was established in 1993 and currently serves hundreds of students a year through its initiatives. By offering free in-school dance instruction through the Go-Move-Dance!!! program, and the opportunity to earn scholarships with the Dance Discovery and Future Dance Scholar programs, Future Dance seeks to expose children from underserved communities to the art form of dance and provide dedicated students with a premiere arts education.
What is GO-MOVE-DANCE!!! ?
GO-MOVE-DANCE is an elementary school residency program that coincides with the school year offering students 25 weeks of free, in-school dance instruction. Students are taught a variety of disciplines, with a focus on ballet, jazz and hip-hop and classes are taught by qualified Future Dance Teaching Artists. At the end of every year GMD students show what they have learned in the annual Future Dance Spring Concert. Dedicated and talented students may be given a scholarship to further pursue dance and graduate into Dance Discovery.
What is Dance Discovery?
NBT’s Dance Discovery offers scholars from the Go-Move-Dance!!! program the opportunity to take four levels of ballet class in a more focused atmosphere at the West Las Vegas Arts Center. Students will garner live performance experience by participating in the Dance Discovery Spring Concert.
What is the Future Dance Scholar Program?
Committed and talented students of Dance Discovery may be chosen as Future Dance Scholars where they will continue their dance studies via scholarship at the Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre in Summerlin. Future Dance Scholars are placed according to their age and skill level and train alongside other enrolled students. All scholars abide by a strict set of rules and guidelines, as outlined in the Future Dance Scholarship Guidelines and Requirements.
What is the School Matinee Series and how do I sign up my child’s academic school?
Since its inception, NBT has been inviting students from the Clark County School District to experience a special matinee performance of a professional company production. In addition to the performance, a question and answer period is held, giving students a greater understanding of the creative process and the behind-the-scenes work that is needed to bring a fully-produced production to the stage. Support materials and teacher preparation guides are provided so that students are properly prepared for what they are about to see. This program is open to all students in K-12th grade. If you are interested in this program for you child’s school please contact Terane Comito at (702) 243-2623 ext. 249.
How does my child’s school become a GO-MOVE-DANCE!!! school site?
NBT’s Education and Outreach department works with the Clark County School District Partnership Office to choose all of the school sites. We do have a waiting list of schools excited to be in the program. The school must be deemed a Focus School or Title 1 with 50% or more of the students on the “Free or Reduced Lunch Program.” If you think your child’s school meets these requirements, let our Education and Outreach Department know. Contact Terane Comito at (702) 243-2623 ext. 249.
If my child is currently enrolled in the Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre and receives a Future Dance/Dance Discovery Scholarship through their GO-MOVE-DANCE!!! School Site, would they become a Future Dance Scholar at the Academy the next season?
No, any student who receives a Future Dance/Dance Discovery Scholarship through a GO-MOVE-DANCE!!! school site must first attend the Dance Discovery Program. Scholars can attend the program for up to 5 years. Dance Discovery Scholars are moved to the Academy and become Future Dance Scholars based on skill level, age, commitment to the Scholarship Guidelines and if there is adequate funding.
Do all Dance Discovery Scholars eventually get moved to the Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre?
Unfortunately no, we only have funding for one to three students to move to the Academy a year. It is a very special honor for just a few students, who are not only talented but also remain committed to the Scholarship Guidelines
If my child is a Future Dance Scholar at the Academy does that guarantee them a role in The Nutcracker or any other production?
No. Future Dance Scholars must go through the same audition process as any student. As with all Academy students, Future Dance Scholars may be called upon to understudy or cover for roles that were not filled during the audition process as per the discretion of NBT artistic staff as outlined in the Academy handbook.
