The Nutcracker Choreographic Workshop with NBT Artistic Director James Canfield
All Levels
An invaluable educational experience open to students of all levels in the Summer Intensive! Witness a master at work and take part in the choreographic process, as renowned teacher and choreographer James Canfield coaches students in new choreography created for his original production of The Nutcracker, to be presented later this year at The Smith Center, NBT's new performance home. Students will gain an invaluable behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creative process as they test and rehearse Mr. Canfield's choreography in advance of the show's December premiere. Students must be registered for the last two weeks of the Summer Intensive (this includes those who register for all four weeks) in order to be enrolled in this workshop.
Please note: Participation in this workshop does not guarantee a role in The Nutcracker; students must still attend the audition in order to be considered.
James Canfield, Nevada Ballet Theatre (NBT) Artistic Director
NBT Artistic Director James Canfield was born in Corning, New York and received his early dance training at the acclaimed Washington School of Ballet under the direction of Mary Day. From there, he joined The Joffrey Ballet and danced an extensive repertoire of works by noted choreographers such as Ashton, Tudor, Balanchine, Arpino, Joffrey, Forsythe, Cranko and DeMille. Mr. Canfield was appointed Oregon Ballet Theatre's (OBT) Founding Artistic Director in 1989 and also established the School of Oregon Ballet Theatre. Under his direction, students have gone on to dance for some of the country's leading ballet companies including New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet and ABT.
In 2009, Mr. Canfield was appointed NBT's third Artistic Director. Since then, several of his works have joined the repertoire including Jungle, Coco, Up, Neon Glass Pas de Deux, Equinoxe and Degas Impressions. Cyclical Night and Still, his first two original works for the company, premiered to rave reviews. Mr. Canfield established several new initiatives for the company including NBT Unveiled, 4 x 8 and The Studio Series. In 2010, he and fellow Joffrey Ballet alumni presented Four Companies One Stage, A Tribute to Robert Joffrey, featuring dancers from NBT, Ballet West, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and Hubbard Street performing together as part of one program. Mr. Canfield is currently choreographing an all-new production of The Nutcracker, set to debut at The Smith Center this December.

Choreographic Workshop with Nevada Ballet Theatre Artistic Coach Cynthia Gregory
Advanced Students
Legendary ballerina Cynthia Gregory will share her expertise with advanced-level Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre students interested in developing their own choreographic talent. This week-long workshop provides a rare collaborative learning experience, as Ms. Gregory teaches her own choreography and then coaches students in choreographing their own ending to her original piece. This is an incredible opportunity for students to explore their own creativity and develop their artistry under Ms. Gregory's expert guidance. Students must be registered for the first two weeks (or all four weeks) of the Summer Intensive and place into the advanced level in order to take part in this one-week workshop held July 9th to 13th.
Cynthia Gregory, Artistic Coach
Cynthia Gregory, whom Rudolf Nureyev called "America's Prima Ballerina Assoluta," is celebrated as one of the world's greatest ballerinas with a career that spanned more than a quarter of a century. Miss Gregory joined American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in 1965 and in 1967, when ABT was on tour in San Francisco, Miss Gregory, not quite 21 years old, made an auspicious debut as Odette/Odile in the full-length Swan Lake. Her New York debut in that role a few months later marked her emergence as a major ballerina. Throughout her career, she was forever associated with her memorable interpretation of Odette/Odile in that quintessential classic.
Ms. Gregory danced in more than 80 other works during her 26 years with the American Ballet Theatre. She is the recipient of many awards, including the 1975 Dance Magazine Award, the 1978 Harkness Ballet Foundation Award and two annual awards from the Dance Educators of America. She has authored two books, Ballet Is the Best Exercise, and Cynthia Gregory Dances Swan Lake.
In 2010, Ms. Gregory joined Nevada Ballet Theatre as its Artistic Coach for both the professional company and the Academy.
